Settlers of Catan 10th Anniversary Edition

Oh what a great day today was! Why? Well after months and months of anticipation my package finally arrived. What package you ask? The Settlers of Catan 10th Anniversary Collectors Edition.
What is so special about this version of the game? I would have to say the fact that each piece is handcrafted, painted and 3D!
First I get this HUGE white box that weighs in at around 19 pounds. Once I opened the packing box I find that my game is packed very carefully with air packaging on all sides holding it securely in place. After removal, the wooden storage chest is inside even more packaging. This is great in my mind, keep what matters safe during shipping, but it is starting to annoy me as well. I want to get to the goods!
Once I get the chest open I start to see the surprise waiting for me. Four sets of game pieces (red, orange, blue, and white). As soon as I start opening each little section of parts I start to see the detail that went into each and every one of the pieces. From the faces on the robbers, the details on the settlements and cities, to the Barbarian ship's skull-shaped stern.
I then moved on to the land hex pieces. Each one of these pieces has great detail as well. The mountains, sheep, trees, rock, wheat, and desert all look great. Each land hex piece has a small space that hold the number coins in place. I am now drooling over setting up the board and getting a game going.
First I assembled the outside edge of the board, which is made of dense 1/4 inch cardboard like material. I then have to open up the included book for how to set up the board and place the numbers.
Now with the board assembled I can try placing the roads, settlements and cities. Everything fits great!
Needless to say I am very impressed with this Collectors Edition of the Settlers of Catan. My set will become something that is used on special occasions and passed down for years to come. My one complaint would be that I wish the chest came with some sort of lock to keep everything safe from my 3 year old. :)
